Netflix's 2025 four-volume epic When Life Gives You Tangerines (폭싹 속았수다) follows Oh Ae-sun (IU) and Yang Gwan-sik (Park Bo-gum) from postwar Jeju in the 1950s through their daughter Yang Geum-myeong's adulthood in the 2000s, narrated as a half-century-long love letter from a daughter to her parents.

Directed by Kim Won-seok and written by Lim Sang-choon on a ₩60 billion production budget, the show swept the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards (Best Drama, Best Screenplay, two acting awards) and was named the #1 K-drama of 2025 by Time and the South China Morning Post. The title — Jeju dialect for "thank you for your hard work" — also doubles as a sound-alike for the standard Korean phrase "you've been completely fooled," the bittersweet pun the show keeps returning to.

The emerald shallows of Gimnyeong Beach are where Ae-sun's mother and her haenyeo colleagues gather before diving, and where young Ae-sun and Gwan-sik run barefoot in the show's earliest childhood flashbacks. Childhood horizon and the three-thousand bows

The UNESCO-listed tuff cone backdrops two of the show's hardest scenes: young Ae-sun memorizing the silhouette with her mother in the early volumes, and the later sequence in which her mother-in-law forces her to perform 3,000 bows (samcheonbae) on the coastal flats below. The 25-minute hike to the crater rim rewards a 360-degree view used as the show's establishing shot.

The cliff conversation on Olle 12

Saengigijeong ("the cliff where birds fly" in Jeju dialect) is the dramatic ocean-facing escarpment where one of Volume III's most quoted dialogues unfolds. The 1.5 km walk along Olle Trail Route 12 strings together the cliff edge, sea-bird colonies, and a panorama of Chagwido Island offshore.

Fan tip: Wind here can be unforgiving — anchor your phone. The most-photographed spot is about 600 m into the trail, where the cliff turns south and Chagwido frames in the distance.

Jeju Stone Park's reconstructed Dolhan Village preserves the basalt-walled lanes, jeongnang gates, and thatched-roof houses that the show's production designers studied for the fictional Dodong-ri. Geum-myeong at the Cannes Cinema ticket booth

Gwangju Theater (광주극장), Korea's oldest single-screen cinema still in operation since 1934, plays the fictional Cannes Cinema where Geum-myeong works the ticket booth and reunites with Yeong-beom in Volume III's romantic-coming-of-age stretch. The interior — red velvet seats, the projection booth, and the hand-painted poster wall — are all the real theater. Recurs in episodes 9 and 10.

Fan tip: Buy a ticket and watch a film inside — the ticket booth and the seats are exactly the show's set. Hand-painted poster wall is in the lobby. Closed Mondays. Behave like in any working cinema (no flash photography).

The Cannes Cinema exterior and the time-travel street

Hapcheon Image Theme Park provides everything Gwangju Theater's interior couldn't: the streets of 1920s-80s Seoul rebuilt to scale, complete with vintage trams, painted signage, and the full exterior the production used for the Cannes Cinema. The walk from the trolley loop to the cinema facade replays Volume III's flashback inserts.

Fan tip: Open 09:00–18:00 (summer) / 09:00–17:00 (winter), closed Mondays. Adult ₩5,000. The Cannes Cinema facade is in the Seoul Street section — they keep the period signage swapped between productions, so check on arrival.

The first kiss in the canola field

Borinara Hagwon Farm's 56-hectare canola and barley fields stand in for Volume I's pivotal first-love scene — Ae-sun and Gwan-sik kissing among the yellow blossoms (sources differ between Hagwon Farm and a Jeju canola field; Hagwon is the most-cited mainland match). The same fields turn green-gold by late spring for the show's closing flashback.

Fan tip: Canola blooms early-mid April. Green barley peaks late April to early May. Free entry, year-round access; the festival weekends are crowded but the farm is largest in Korea (561,983 m²) so spread out works.
