Korean Barbershop Guide: Getting a Men's Haircut in Seoul

Korean barbers are some of the best in the world for men's hair. Here's how to walk in, what to ask for, how much it costs, and which styles to try.

Why Get a Haircut in Korea?

Korean barbers and hairstylists are trained to perfection. The 'two-block' cut (short sides, textured top) originated here and Korean stylists have mastered volume, texture, and face-framing techniques that Western barbers often can't replicate. A quality cut costs 15,000-30,000 KRW ($11-22 USD) — a fraction of what you'd pay for similar quality in NYC or London. Plus, most salons include a shampoo and basic styling.

How to Get a Haircut

1

Find a Salon

Search Naver Map for '남성 미용실' (men's hair salon) or '바버샵' (barbershop) near you. Hongdae, Gangnam, and Seongsu have the trendiest shops. Chain salons like Juno Hair or Blue Club are reliable and affordable. Walk-ins are common, but popular shops may need a reservation via Naver.

2

Show a Photo

The easiest way to communicate what you want. Save 2-3 reference photos on your phone — Korean celebrity hairstyles work perfectly as references. K-drama actors, K-pop idols, or even Instagram barber posts. The stylist will tell you honestly if it suits your face and hair type.

3

Popular Korean Men's Styles

Two-block cut (투블럭): short back and sides, longer textured top — the Korean classic. Comma hair (쉼표머리): center-parted fringe that curves like a comma. Dandy cut (댄디컷): clean, professional, slightly longer. Crew cut with texture: short all around with product styling.

4

The Experience

Expect a shampoo before the cut, precise scissor/clipper work, and blow-dry styling with product. Many places also include a quick eyebrow trim. The whole process takes 30-50 minutes. Some premium shops offer a hot towel, scalp massage, or ear cleaning.

5

Pay and Learn

Pay at the counter (card is fine). Ask the stylist to show you how to style it at home — they'll demonstrate the product and technique. Buy the styling product they used if you like it — Korean hair wax and setting spray are excellent.

Tips

Do

  • Bring reference photos — worth a thousand words across any language barrier
  • Try a Korean perm if you have flat/thin hair — it adds volume Korean guys love
  • Ask for styling tips and product recommendations before leaving
  • Book via Naver if going to a popular shop on weekends
  • Consider getting a perm + cut combo — Korean perms are subtle and natural, not grandma curls

Don't

  • Don't tip — not expected at salons in Korea
  • Don't be surprised if they wash your hair before cutting — it's standard
  • Don't insist on a Western-style fade if the barber suggests something else — trust their expertise with Asian hair techniques
  • Don't rush — Korean haircuts are detailed and take 30-50 minutes

The Korean Perm Trick

Korean men's perms are nothing like what you're imagining. A 'down perm' adds natural body and wave to flat hair, making it look effortlessly styled even without product. A 'setting perm' creates subtle S-wave texture. Both last 2-3 months and are the secret behind most K-drama hairstyles. Costs 40,000-80,000 KRW and is absolutely worth trying.
