How to reach Hwangnidan-gil from popular areas

From Seoul Station

KTX from Seoul Station to Singyeongju takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. From Singyeongju, take Bus 700 (timed with KTX, ~40 minutes) toward downtown Gyeongju and get off near Hwangnidan-gil or Daereungwon. Local buses 50 / 51 / 60 / 61 also serve this route more frequently.

From Busan Station

KTX from Busan Station takes about 30 minutes. SRT also serves this route at similar speed.

From Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal

If arriving by intercity bus, the express terminal is a 15-minute walk west of Hwangnidan-gil, or a short taxi ride.

Before You Go

All six stops are connected by foot — total walking distance is about 2.6 km. No buses or taxis needed once you arrive in central Gyeongju.
Time your day so you reach Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond around sunset. Korean sunset is roughly 17:30 in winter and 19:30 in summer; the pavilions are illuminated until 22:00 (last admission 21:30).
Cheonmachong (Heavenly Horse Tomb) inside Daereungwon is the only royal tomb whose interior is open to the public. The ₩3,000 ticket is worth the 30-minute detour for the replica burial chamber and recovered grave goods.
Hanbok rental shops cluster along Hwangnidan-gil and around Daereungwon. Wearing hanbok grants free admission to most paid sites in Gyeongju.
Hwangnidan-gil is busiest on weekends and holidays — visit on a weekday morning if you prefer quieter cafes.
Bring comfortable walking shoes. The route is flat but cumulative.

Begin the day on Gyeongju's most popular street. Hwangnidan-gil winds through Hwangnam-dong's preserved hanok lanes, lined with 400+ cafes, dessert shops, and photo studios that mostly opened after 2017. Pick a coffee, browse a few hanok-front boutiques, and ease into the rhythm of the city. Most cafes open around 10:00; brunch spots are busiest 11:00-13:00.

Twenty-three royal burial mounds rise from a manicured pine grove inside walled grounds. The park is free; a separate ₩3,000 ticket lets you walk inside Cheonmachong, the only Silla royal tomb opened to the public. Inside is a replica of the original burial chamber and grave goods including the famous birch-bark painting of a heavenly horse that gave the tomb its name. Allow about an hour for the full circuit.

A 9.17 m bottle-shaped stone tower in an open field, built during Queen Seondeok's reign (632-647) and considered the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia. The 365 granite stones represent the days of the year, the 12 base stones the months, and the central window aligns with the equinoxes. Photogenic at any hour; particularly striking at golden hour and after dark when illuminated. A 15-20 minute stop.

A small ancient woodland tied to the founding myth of the Gyeongju Kim clan. According to the legend, in 65 CE a king's minister found a golden box hanging from a branch under a crowing rooster — inside lay the infant Kim Alji, ancestor of one of Korea's largest clans. The grove's old oak, willow, and zelkova trees are protected as Historic Site No. 19. Quiet and shaded — a 20-30 minute stroll.

A reconstructed Silla-era covered wooden bridge that once linked the royal palace at Wolseong to Mount Namsan. Originally built in 760 CE, it took thirty years of historical research before reopening in April 2018 as the largest wooden bridge in Korea. Walk across, then climb to the second floors of either gatehouse — both house exhibits on the reconstruction. The bridge is most photogenic in late afternoon and after dark when illuminated and reflected on the Namcheon stream.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond

The route's climax. Donggung was a Silla secondary palace built around a manmade pond used for state banquets, originally called Wolji ('the pond reflecting the moon'). Three pavilions and the lakeshore circuit are illuminated after dark, casting their reflections on the still water — the most photographed nightscape in Gyeongju. Walk the full pond circuit (about 45-60 minutes) and stay until the lights catch the dusk if you can. Last admission 21:30; lights off at 22:00.
