The largest temporary royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty, built during King Jeongjo's reign as a wartime retreat and venue for royal visits and ceremonies. The palace was where Jeongjo held the famous banquet celebrating his mother Queen Hyegyeonggung's 60th birthday in 1795.

Walk through the courtyards and main halls before heading to the fortress walls. On weekends, traditional martial arts performances take place in the front courtyard.

The northern watergate of Hwaseong Fortress featuring seven arched watergates that control the flow of Suwoncheon Stream. Also known as Buksumun (Northern Water Gate), it is renowned as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Suwon and for its nighttime illumination.

The Eastern Command Post (Dongjangdae) of Hwaseong Fortress, historically used as the primary military training ground for Joseon troops. Today it offers traditional Korean archery (gukgung) experiences on a 145 m regulation range and a 30 m beginner range, open to visitors aged 7 and above.

The southern main gate of Hwaseong Fortress, built in 1796 as part of the fortress construction. Designated as Treasure No. 402, it features a distinctive crescent-shaped outer wall (ongseong) and a hip-roof watchtower. It served as the main ceremonial entrance for royal processions under King Jeongjo.

A roughly 100-meter alley near Paldalmun Gate lined with around 11 traditional fried chicken restaurants, some operating since the 1970s. The shops use large cast-iron cauldrons (gamasot) to deep-fry whole chickens, a cooking method specific to this street. Most orders come with complimentary fried chicken gizzards as a side.

End the walk with Suwon's signature dish — whole fried chicken cooked in large cast-iron cauldrons, a method used here since the 1970s. The alley has about 11 restaurants packed into 100 meters. Most serve complimentary fried gizzards as a starter. Paldalmun Market is right next door if you want to browse the stalls afterward.
