A defensive fortification erected between 1794 and 1796 during the Joseon Dynasty under King Jeongjo. The walls extend approximately 5.7 km around Paldalsan Mountain and were designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in December 1997. The fortress includes four main gates, multiple watchtowers, command posts, and bastions, a masterwork of late 18th-century military architecture.
