SBS's 2026 fantasy rom-com My Royal Nemesis (멋진 신세계) follows Kang Dan-shim, a notorious Joseon royal concubine who dies by poison and wakes four centuries later in the body of Shin Seo-ri, a struggling no-name actress played by Lim Ji-yeon.

Released worldwide on Netflix, the series shot to No.1 on the global Top 10 non-English chart in its first week and entered the Top 10 across 44 countries, with much of the praise going to Lim Ji-yeon's manic comic turn opposite Heo Nam-jun's ruthless Cha Il Group heir, Cha Se-gye.

Meeting the shaman by the stream

As a solar eclipse begins, the time-displaced Seo-ri reaches Cheonggyecheon stream and its Gwangtonggyo bridge, where she encounters the shaman. The backdrop is the giant ceramic-tile mural of King Jeongjo's royal procession (Banchado).

Foisting the rescue dog on Cha Se-gye

On the hanok-walled lane beside Jongmyo Shrine, Seo-ri foists a rescue dog she names Gyeon Seonsaeng onto the reluctant, dog-allergic Cha Se-gye, arguing his big house suits the pup better than her windowless goshiwon room. The tidal island Se-gye explains

On the Jeju trip, Cha Se-gye points out and explains Seogeon-do to Seo-ri - a small wooded islet off Gangjeong-dong in Seogwipo that a land path opens out to at low tide, often called 'Jeju's Moses miracle'.

How to get there: Off the coast at Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo (southern Jeju). A Seogeon-do viewpoint sits on the shore. The tidal walkway to the islet emerges only at low tide.
Fan tip: Known as 'Jeju's Moses miracle' - at low tide a path of seabed surfaces so you can walk out to the small wooded islet, then disappears as the water rises. Check the day's tide times before visiting. Note that the wide shot of the islet across the water was actually filmed at Solseom in Buan on the west coast, a much-photographed pine islet, while Seogeon-do off Gangjeong is the place the scene itself refers to.

Framed in najeon, Korea's mother-of-pearl art

Each act of My Royal Nemesis opens on a title card wreathed in iridescent inlay. That shimmering border is najeon, the centuries-old Korean craft of cutting mother-of-pearl from shell into paper-thin slivers and setting it into deep black lacquer.

It is a fitting frame for a story that slips between a Joseon palace and modern Seoul. The same craft that once decorated a queen's writing box now glints around a 2026 rom-com.
