The head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, located in the heart of Seoul. Founded in 1910 as Gakhwangsa, it serves as the administrative center of Korean Buddhism's largest order, which oversees approximately 3,500 temples nationwide. The temple is famous for its spectacular lotus lantern displays during Buddha's Birthday celebrations in May. Despite being an urban temple rather than a mountain monastery, Jogyesa offers a peaceful retreat and hosts templestay programs for visitors.
